Lactobacillus buchneri bacteria were originally identified by researchers from buckets of corn silage that stayed surprisingly cool after being exposed to air for several days. These bacteria were isolated and grown in pure cultures to be used as an inoculant. These inoculants are promoted for preventing forage heating and spoilage after exposure to air.
